It should go without saying, but I am saying it anyway, that homes have to be kept clean. In the US Navy, a day spent cleaning is called a "field day." When I lived in the barracks buildings, we did a Field Day once a week. That is a good rule to follow. Once a week, seems to be the perfect regularity to keep dust down and keep the clean space that spiders and other critters don't like.
Organizing is all about keeping clutter from developing and storing things away where they are easy to find. Everyone should go through closets on a regular basis to decide what is not longer needed, and then those items should be donated. Important papers should be filed. An organized house gets rid of a lot of stress, as things can be found when they are needed.
Home Maintenance is a required activity, if you want to protect your investment. Caulk joints must be sealed, gutters must be cleared, moss powder should be put on roofs, and plants should trimmed back away from the building, just to name a few items listed in the Annual Maintenance Guide found on our website at www.movesmart.net. Homes do not maintain themselves and if you are not doing regular maintenance you can have $5,000, $10,000 or more repairs sneak up on you that could have been avoided.
The systems and components on houses break. Nothing lasts forever. So, as a result, repairs must be made. A common repair is toilet rebuild kit. The components inside the toilet tank don't last forever and unless you want to replace the entire toilet, the tank components need to be replaced once in awhile with a rebuild kit.
If you have done a good job cleaning, organizing, maintaining, and repairing your home, there may come a time when you want to renovate, remodel, or upgrade it. Maybe you want to turn a kitchen wall into half wall with a countertop and stools. Maybe old carpeting will be replaced with free floating faux wood floors. Maybe a new coat of paint everywhere would be nice, or a deck, or covered patio. By upgrading you get to enjoy the house a lot more and of course if you sell, the price you get will increase as well.
So, there you have it, the 5 levels of Home Care. If you keep up with these 5 levels, you will enjoy your home much more, and it will be worth much more money.
